  1. A piano or pianoforte is a stringed musical 
  2. instrument played by felt-covered hammers 
  3. activated from a keyboard. It is capable of 
  4. dynamic gradation between soft (piano) and 
  5. loud (forte) tones, hence its name. The 
  6. first piano was constructed 1704 and 
  7. introduced 1709 by Bartolommeo Cristofori, a 
  8. harpsichordmaker in Padua. It uses a clever 
  9. mechanism to make the keyboard 
  10. touch-sensitive.
